Top 100 Songs of the Decade: “Fred Meyers” by Glen Phillips

Fred Meyers
by Glen Phillips (2001)

Glen Phillips is best known as the lead singer of the band Toad The Wet Sprocket. They had several hits in the 90’s, before breaking up in 1998.  In 2001, Glen released Abulum, his first solo album, which included the song “Fred Meyers.”  Living in California, I had never even heard of the department store, Fred Meyers, which are located in the North Western United States.

The song, about a guy who lives inside a vacant Fred Meyers store, has always been one of my favorites.  It’s a weird concept for a song, but I love the lyrics and vocals.  I don’t think at the time I would have thought this would still be one of my favorites almost ten years later, but it’s really held up over the years.
