Top 100 Songs Of The Decade: “Angelyne” by The Jayhawks

by The Jayhawks (2003)

I like many different types and styles of music. The majority of the songs I like usually fit under the “rock” or “indie rock” classification, but there are some exceptions. I really like just about anything, as long as it’s good. The artist I featured yesterday, Jamie Cullum, mostly performs jazz. And today’s song is by The Jayhawks, who perform some of the best alt-country around.

Many people know of The Jayhawks only from their single “Blue” which was released back in 1995. That song was later covered by Matthew Sweet, Pete Droge and Shawn Mullins recording together as The Thorns in 2003.

But also in 2003, The Jayhawks would release their seventh studio album, Rainy Day Music. I actually got to see The Jayhawks AND The Thorns perform together at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California that year. It was an amazing show.  And one of the songs from Rainy Day Music would go on to become my favorite song of 2003, a song called “Angelyne.”

The Jayhawks are technically still together, but have been on hiatus as a band since 2005, while lead singer Gary Louris and other band members have worked on solo and other projects. Here’s hoping they get back to making some new music together soon. 2010 will mark the 25th anniversary of the band forming in Milwaukee, Wisconsin back in 1985.
